Over 300 pupils of Nakanyonyi Project Primary School in Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council in Mukono district are stuck following a heavy downpour which destroyed their four-classroom block. Winnie Namukwaya, one of the teachers at Nakanyonyi Project, a UPE school said they were shocked after turning up on Tuesday morning and they found four of their classrooms fully destroyed.
Namukwaya said they had no option but to ask the entire school community to go back home as the headteacher communicated to officials at the district asking for help.
“What is unfortunate is the fact that we have not yet done the exams yet we are in a rainy season. We are only remaining with one block which houses only three classrooms that cannot accommodate the entire school community,” she said.
According to Namukwaya, the affected classrooms include; Primary Six, Primary Five, Primary Four and Primary Three.
Mukono Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Fatuma Ndisaba Nabitaka while reporting about this incident said that two sub-counties were greatly affected.
The mostly affected villages include; Kwaba, Nnamengo, Kasala, Kyabakadde, Kyampisi in Ddundu in Kyampisi sub-county whereas in Nakifuma-Naggalama, they are; Nakanyonyi 1, Nakanyonyi 2, Kirangira, Kasambya, Kalagi and Gwendidde.
Ndisaba said that over 200 houses lost their roofs and that the residents are lacking shelters hence calling for help from the government through the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Education.
Ronald Mpadwa together with his wife Harriet Najjuma told this publication that their house lost its roof at around midnight and tried to protect their three children from the falling wreckages.
Mpadwa said they were hit by the bricks so much that left them injured though their children are all safe.
Issa Nvule, the Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council said they were compiling a list of the affected residents which they were going to send to the district asking for help.
Nvule said the residents also lost plantations like, banana, maize, cassava, among others.
Jamir Yiga, the Kyampisi sub-county chairperson said at Kyampisi Health Centre III, a tree fell on the facility roof.
Yiga said over 100 houses from the community in different villages also fell down whereas others lost their roofs.
