Mukono Central Division on Wednesday won the Goma Division in the Mukono Municipality Primary Schools Athletics Championship 2023. The championship was hosted at Global Junior School in Mukono Central Division with the best players selected from all the schools which participated in this year’s athletics competitions from Mukono Municipality.
Cyras Ssemuhara, the Mukono Municipality sports officer declared Mukono Central Division winner with 1,310 points which they gathered out of a number of disciplines including running, high jump, short-put, javelin, discus, among others.
Ssemuhara said he has been impressed by the quality of the prayers presented in this year’s competitions. He said they have selected the best team which is going to represent Mukono Municipality at the National Primary Schools Athletics Competitions which will be held in Luweero District in early May.
“I am sure the prayers will represent us well as it has always been our tradition in national competitions,” Ssemuhara boasted.
Elly Bangumya, the director of Mukono Junior School located at Ngandu, in Mukono Central Division said being in urban centre, Mukono Municipality has got very many schools which lack enough land to put up play grounds which is one of the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Sports.
Bangumya however asked Mukono Municipality leaders to think of constructing a modern recreation centre which will be used by the urban dwellers including schools.
“Apart from the football pitch, it should also have modern play facilities like swimming pools, volleyball, tennis and basketball coats,” he advised.
Christopher Miwanda, the chairperson Mukono Central Division’s co-curricular activities and director St. Mary’s Bunyana Junior School asked the government to start supporting schools through funding the construction of modern play facilities more so in urban centres.
Miwanda said such facilities would also be used to identify, boost and nurture talents of children and the youth.
Mukono Municipality Deputy Mayor, William Makumbi advised schools without play grounds to get into memorandum with schools which have them within their localities so that they can get days and take children there for a number of games.
James Wasswa, the head of co-curricular activities at Global Junior School and Mukono Central Division was so grateful for the win they got from Goma division.
Wasswa warned the rest of the teams from different local governments across the country which will be at Luweero for the national competitions to also get ready to be taught a lesson.
Global Junior School presented a big number of participants for different disciplines. Among them were the twins, Evans Kato (P.5) and Precious Babirye (P.5) who staged very good performances from a number of disciplines.
Betty Acio, the chairperson Goma Division Headteachers’ Association called upon headteachers and school directors who did not participate in the competitions to endeavour to do so next year.
The government and Ministry of Education intends to promote and identify talents of the young ones from schools through these competitions.
