Police have arrested a private security guard who allegedly shot dead a third-year student of Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango has identified the suspect as Kaliri Tugume (27) and the deceased as Rodney Agaba.

Onyango said that the incident happened at Meru Fuel Station located at Kiwanga trading centre in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality on Sunday at around 1:00pm.

“We have charged Tugume with murder and he is detained at Seeta Police Station. The body of Agaba was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a port-mortem report,” he said.

Onyango said that Agaba developed misunderstandings with Tugume, a private security guard who was on duty as he tried to climb the wall fence of the petrol station.

“It is alleged that Tugume stopped Agaba from climbing the wall fence but he did not listen, hence shooting at him. Agaba was rushed to Ggwatiro Health Centre in Bweyogerere where he was pronounced dead,” he explained.

Police is said to have recovered the killer weapon from the scene of crime, rifle SMG UG pos56400780 -11666.

UCU Communications Officer, Jimmy Siyasa confirmed the death of their student, Rodney Agaba, a third-year student from the School of International Business.

This is the second case of shooting to a UCU student in a two-week’s time following the first incident where Natasha Nagayi, 21, was shot by a Senior Police Officer, ASP Dismass Tebangole (57) (No T/460) at Nabuti Cell in Mukono Central Division on May 20, 2023. The suspect, Tebangole, is a Counter Terrorism Police Personnel.

It was reported that the incident happened at about 1:00am when Tebangole noticed an unusual attempt to open his door.

Engulfed with uncertainty, the officer shot at the victim through the window, hitting Naggayi at her lower arm.

It was alleged that Naggayi had been accompanied by her boyfriend who was identified as Ashraf Bandishe who had taken her for an outing and that it’s the one who had given her the key to open his home, which she failed to locate and ended up at Tebangole’s door.

Naggayi who first sought medical attention from Kawolo Hospital was later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.

The two shooting incidents come at a time when the country is witnessing a wake of gun-violence.
