The Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja has asked the people of Busoga sub-region especially in Mayuge district to embrace government programmes aimed at improving household incomes.
Nabbanja noted that all wealth creation programmes in Uganda are designed to ensure that people get out of poverty and that in the same vein, the people of Busoga will not be exonerated.
Going by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics reports released mid last year (2022), Busoga’s poverty levels stood at 29.2% compared to the national average of 20.3%.
“Government has in the last 20 years introduced different poverty alleviation programs like Bonnabagaggawale, Youth Venture capital Fund, Youth Livelihood Program (YLP) and Uganda Women Empowerment Program (UWEP). We are currently promoting Emyooga and Parish Development Model (PDM),” she said.
She asked the people of Busoga to always get involved in these programs if they want to get out of poverty as President Museveni has over the time urged them.
Nabbanja made the remarks on Saturday while presiding over the belated Mayuge district women’s day celebrations at Bukaboli primary school grounds in Mayuge district.
Responding to concerns of poor road network and harassment to the fishing community, Nabbanja assured them of government’s commitment to improve service delivery.
The 3rd Deputy Prime Minister and woman Member of Parliament for Mayuge Rukia Nakadama asked the people to embrace palm tree growing which will be introduced in the area by government to reduce on poverty levels which are worryingly high.
Alice Kaboyo, state minister for Luwero/Rwenzori and Busoga regions assured the people of Busoga that government has been sending money equivalent to 3.3bn for affirmative action and more will be released.
The Prime Minister earlier on in the day performed the ground breaking function for Bukaboli sub county headquarters construction and gave in 10m shillings to support the initiative.
The belated Mayuge district women’s day celebrations were marked under the theme “innovation and technology for gender equality.
