UPDF Officer Arrested in Luzira Mobile Money Robbery

The Police are holding a UPDF officer who got involved in an armed robbery in which a businessman was killed and another one injured. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango, colossal sums of money amounting to sh72m were stolen.

Onyango says that the incident took place on Friday June 30, 2023, at approximately 21:30 hours in Luzira Stage 7 Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala district.

“According to reports, Bahati Aggrey and Nyamukulu Annah were in the process of closing their Mobile Money outlet when two armed thugs approached them. The assailants fired shots into the air, causing panic, and Bahati Aggrey managed to escape, leaving Nyamukulu trapped inside the shop.
The criminals proceeded to break into the shop, stealing a total of UGX 72,000,000 (Seventy-two million shillings),” he said.

He added: “As the perpetrators fled the scene, they encountered members of the public who attempted to intervene. During the encounter, the thugs discharged their firearms, resulting in the death of Ssenyondo Richard and the injury of Nakigudde Betty.”

Onyango confirmed that while one of the thugs successfully evaded capture, police managed to arrest two suspects.

“The suspects currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station are;
Guma Vincent (34), a soldier, a resident of Kikubamutwe army barracks along Kayunga road and Mugerwa Darglous (47), Legal Assistant, a resident of Lake side Luzira, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.
Police recovered an AK-47 firearm as evidence.

“A team of police officers from the Kampala Metropolitan Police East and Jinja Road Police Division visited the crime scene and recorded statements from relevant witnesses,” he said.
The body of the deceased, identified as Ssenyondo Richard (38) a businessperson residing in Mutungo, Nakawa Division, was handed over to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem examination.

Onyango said that the injured victim, Nakigudde Betty, is receiving medical treatment.
He assured the general public that the investigation is ongoing, and the police are pursuing leads to bring all those responsible to justice.
