The fraternity of the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi is dismayed by the san news of the death of an educationist, Sr. Mary Thereza Kabananura (64).
Sr. Kabananura is reported to have died from Nairobi in Kenya where she had been taken to seek medical attention.
Preparations to have her body back and be accorded a decent burial are under way. There is a mass at Naggalama Catholic parish today on Monday December 18, 2023 at 11:00pm. Vigil will be held at Nkokonjeru Mother House on Tuesday December 19, 2023, and burial on Wednesday on December 20, 2023 starting with mass at 11:00am.
Sr. Kabananura’s profile
Sr. Thereza Kabananura is a daughter of the Late Yowana Batisita Karumanga and Josephine Kakazi of Nyarubumba village in Kayonza sub-county, in Rushenyi County, Ntungamo district August 1959.
She went to St. Paul Rushoka Primary School P1-P5. From Primary Six to Primary Seven she was at Thereza Rushoroza Kabaale Primary School. By then, she lived at the Mission at the diocese and completed Primary Seven in 1975. She went to Rushoroza College School for secondary education and completed in 1979.
In 1980 after Senior Four, she joined the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in Nkokonjeru in Buikwe district, where she was admitted for formation.
Upon completion, in 1983, she started working with Nkokonjeru Providence Home, a charity home taking care of the poor and old people especially affected by accidents, the homeless, the crippled, the deaf, dumb and mad.
Joins teaching profession
In 1985, she was admitted at Nkokonjeru Primary Teachers College for a grade three certificate which she completed in 1987. She was admitted as the College Librarian after the death of the Reverend Sister who was serving in that post.
From there, Sr. Kabananura was appointed the headteacher of Uganda Martyrs Junior Boys Primary School Namilyango, replacing Late Sr. Joseph Nanfuka in 1996.
She helped to put up a school brass band, setting a new trend of the school owning a brass band, something which had never been there before.
She worked with Namilyango College and Rider Hotel in Seeta to have the Seeta-Namilyango road tarmacked after seeking permission from government through the help of the Late Member of Parliament Basoga Nsadhu.
She constructed the first storeyed building, increased the school enrolment from 700 pupils to 1000 by the time of her departure.
She constructed the school’s perimeter wall to secure the premises of the school but also to secure the pupils from any external interference.
She bought a brand new school bus to provide transport for the boys following the government’s ban of transporting school children on lorries for trips.
Transfered to St. Agnes Catholic Girls Boarding Primary School Naggalama
Sr. Kabananura was in 2009 transferred to St. Agnes Catholic Girls Boarding Primary School in Naggalama. Reports show that at St. Agnes, Sr. Kabananura found the school with 450 pupils and she managed to uplift the enrolment to 791.
She bought three vehicles for the school, among which, a 14-seater, a truck and a bus. She put up a storeyed building for teachers’ accommodation of self-contained facilities housing 14 teachers. She also put up a centenary celebrations storeyed building for the girls accommodation.
During her reign, St. Agnes rose among the best performing schools in Mukono district and at the national level.
