The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among has vowed to jealously guard her seat, narrating the worst past experience she passed through to struggle and become who she is today.

Among says that she worked hard as a house girl, local brew seller and cleaner at Centenary Bank, after running away from home following the rejection by her father.

She narrates that when she rejected the call by her father who wanted to force her into childhood marriage like he did to her older sisters, the old man decided to reject her but even that did not deter her to fight through and become victorious.

The Speaker made the remarks on Tuesday during the launch of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum to End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy.

“First of all, there was nobody to pay my fees, I would work as an unpaid house girl. When you talk about poverty, you need to empower yourself and know what you want as a person. I started selling local brew as I was working as a house girl to pay for myself,” she said adding;

“But it also comes back to you as a girl to know what you want in life, I refused and said I will not get married and as a result, my father rejected me.  I said it is okay, time will come when you will know that you are my father.”

While making her address, the Speaker rejected the call for use of contraceptives among teenagers, saying despite the poverty, the girls should know what they want in life and delay engaging in sexual intercourse that result in unwanted pregnancies and later children.

Among survived being defiled by sisters’ husband
“So when it reached my time, I was going to P.7, first of all, I was very brilliant, I didn’t study nursery, when I was in P.1 they took me straight to P3 because I was too clever for the class. P.3 I studied there, I went to P5, so that is how young I was, but you reach a class and somebody says, we need cows because for us we are cattle keepers, I ran away from home and became a house girl, stayed in those people’s homes and at one time I said no, let me go and stay with one of my sisters. My sister’s husband wanted to rape me, I still ran away. My belief was one, I must be the most educated in that home, and I thank God that I am the Speaker of Parliament.”
