Njeru Municipality Mayor Yasin Kyazze and his deputy Sarah Mawejje are on spot for conniving with a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) to extort money from them.

Kyazze and Mawejje are accused by the parents for backing a fake NGO Mukiisa Humanity and Inclusion Foundation located at Umber Court in Jinja City which extorted money out of them in promise of scholarships.

Everine Nakkazi, one of the victims residing at Namwezi zone told this website that the promises made by the staff of the NGO and the leaders prompted her to get a loan outside the knowledge of her husband with intentions of securing bursaries for her three children.

Nakkazi together with other victims that were over 150 in number stormed the offices of Mukiisa Humanity and Inclusion Foundation demanding for the refund of their money.

“Given the fact that our mayor, Yasin Kyazze and his deputy Sarah Mawejje were the ones backing the NGO that has turned up to be fraudulent, we had no doubt in it but to each and everything that its staff asked us to provide them with in promise of bursaries for our children, only to wait in vain,” said one of the angry parents.

Melanie Mataaga, the director of Mukiisa Humanity & Inclusion Foundation.

Information gathered by Kyaggwe TV shows that parents were asked to pay sh30,000 for each of the children, passport photos for both the parents and the children together with a copy of the parents’ national identity card.

The parents revealed that they paid their money in December 2023 as they had been promised to start benefiting from the bursary scheme in the first term 2024 but to date, the organization is still feeding them stories.

“What pains us mostly is the fact that the fraudulent bursary scheme was spearheaded by the entire Njeru Municipality political leadership that included the mayor, Yasin Kyazze, his deputy Sarah Mawejje and some of the councilors. We are asking them to arrange for a refund of our money,” the victims requested.

The affected parents have appealed to the Police and other government officials to come to their rescue.

When contacted on phone over the allegations, Njeru Municipality Mayor, Yasin Kyazze explained that his deputy Sarah Mawejje introduced the organization to him and he allowed it to operate in Njeru.

However, when contacted, the deputy mayor Sarah Mawejje confirmed that she knows the organization and it’s very authentic adding that her brother owns it.

Mawejje said that despite the allegations by the victims, the organization has helped many people to access free education.

She went further to refute the allegations by the victims that the organization does not have permanent offices where they revealed that it has been grappling with rent and has been moving in different locations which she described as false information.

Melanie Mataaga, the director of Mukiisa Humanity & Inclusion Foundation confirmed that for the four years the organization has been in operation, they have been charging sh30,000 from each student to benefit from the program.

Mataaga added that they deployed their staff in Njeru to register all the students who wanted bursaries and over 150 turned up.

“We registered them but since then, we have been struggling to have them recruited but we have not yet been successful,” he confirmed.

Mataaga blamed the organisation’s failure and downfall on the politicians in Njeru Municipality who jumped on it with intentions of owning it.

We are working around the clock to make sure that we gather the money we collected from the parents and make a refund.

As tensions rose, Samuel Ssekaggya, the community development officer of Njeru municipality, confirmed the organization’s lack of legal authorization to operate within the area.

Ssekaggya warned residents against transacting any business with Mukiisa Humanity & Inclusion Foundation.

However, Mataaga countered, asserting that Sarah Mawejje, the deputy mayor had sanctioned the organization’s operations before visiting Ssekaggya’s office.
