St. Catherine Primary School located at Sonde in Goma Division is the winner of the Bukeerere Zone in Mukono Municipality Primary Schools Athletics Competition 2023. St. Catherine, the host emerged winner after leading in a number of activities that included running, high jump, short-put, javelin among others.

The competitions held on Friday attracted 13 different schools from Bukeerere ward. The Mukono Municipality Sports Officer, Gerald Sirus Semuhara was impressed by the good quality of the participants.

“I am optimistic that Mukono Municipality will present quality players at the National competitions that will be held at Luweero in a month’s time,” he said.

Semuhara was however disappointed by the small number of schools that participated, saying for over 400 primary schools in Mukono Municipality, only 50 were registered.

He asked the headteachers of the schools that failed to participate to write to him explaining why they didn’t, yet they very well know that these competitions are part of the Ministry of Education calendar for primary schools.

“With such competitions, we intend to promote and identify talents of the young ones from schools. It’s a policy of the Ministry of Education and disciplinary action will be taken to schools which will fail to respond with satisfying reasons,” he noted.

The full-day event concluded close to 7:00pm and the compilation of the results ended at around 8:00pm.

Maria Goretti Naigaga, the head of sports activities in Bukeerere Zone presented the results to Semuhara showing St. Catherine in the first position, Kireka Development Primary School, Low and Joy Junior School, Tenacity Primary School and Kyesereka Primary School.

Semuhara handed over the trophy to the winners of St. Catherine and another to the runners-up of Kireka Development Primary School.
