Police Officer Shoots UPDF Officer Dead in Mbarara

The Police in the Rwizi Region have arrested one of its own men who allegedly shot dead a UPDF Officer. Police identified the suspect as NO.50158 PC Opio Charles attached to Field Force Unit (FFU) of Mbarara Police and the deceased as L/CPL Yeremiah Paper, a UPDF officer attached to Ruhengyere Engineering Brigade in Kiruhura District.

The duo is said to have got some misunderstandings that resulted in shootings. The incident was reported to have happened at about 6:00pm on Friday May 19, 2023 in front of Mbarara Main Prison behind Rubis Petrol Station next to Bank of Uganda.

Opio, the suspect was arrested and charged with murder on CRB 662/2023 and he is detained at Mbarara Central Police Station as the investigation into the case commenced.

The body of the deceased was however taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.

A number of murders by shooting have continuously been recorded of recent involving Police officers, army officers and private security guards.

Uttam Bhandari, the Indian National who was shot dead by a Police officer Wabwire.

An Indian money lender, Uttam Bhandari (37) was shot dead by a police officer PC Ivan Wabwire attached to Central Police Station in Kampala. The incident happened at Raja Chambers on Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala Central Business Area on Friday last week.

Wabwire was arrested by Police at Busia as he tried to flee the country to Kenya and brought back to Kampala. He was subsequently presented before court, charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison.

Uttam was the director of TFS Financial Services at Raja Chambers on Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala and it’s believed that he had borrowed Wabwire over sh2,130,000 in 2020 and failure to agree on the repayment plan is said to have been the spark of the murder.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police are also hunting for a security guard who allegedly shot his colleague dead.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson said that Peter Ochoroi developed a quarrel with John Mujumbi over unknown reasons which ended into a fatal shooting.

The duo has been security guards attached to Capital Guards and Patrol. The incident was reported to have happened on Saturday May 13, 2023 at around 12:30pm in Kalule Zone, Lukuli Parish, Makindye Division in Kampala district.

Owoyesigyire said that Mujumbi (25) and Ochoroi (26) were stationed at IDAK Apartments in Konge as part of their security duties.

“Both guards were armed with Semi-Automatic Rifles (SAR), each loaded with five rounds of ammunition. Their assigned duty was to provide security during night time, as per their supervisor’s instructions,” he said.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing an argument between the two guards, conducted in a language they did not understand.

Shortly thereafter, a gunshot was heard originating from the same room. The police swiftly responded to the scene, accompanied by the divisional team and the Scene of Crime Officer.

Owoyesigyire said: “The victim was immediately rushed to Mulago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
