Police Arrest Two School Chefs over 100 Poisoned Pupils

The Police in Mityana district have registered a case of suspected poisoning at Golden Learning Centre Nursery and Primary School.

Racheal Kawala, Wamala Region Police spokesperson says the incident happened on September 27, 2023, around 4:30pm at Namungo Central Village in Namungo sub-county, Mityana District.

 

Kawala noted that the involved pupils experienced symptoms such as stomach ache, headache, and vomiting immediately after being served with Posho and beans for lunch at 2:00pm.

“Over 100 affected pupils were taken to various health facilities, including Namungo Health Center III and MUKJ Medical Clinic. The scene of crime was visited by our detectives and documented, with statements recorded from victims,” she said in a police communication statement.

She confirmed arrest of two suspects, identified as Kule Alfred and Mumbere Edger, both school cooks, who are to aid with the ongoing investigations and are currently detained at Mityana Central Police Station.

“Food samples from the school have been collected for forensic analysis. The school was sealed off pending further guidance,” she said.

Preliminary findings indicate a total enrollment of 350 pupils, with most students discharged by evening, leaving about 50 under medical monitoring but in stable conditions.At least no fatalities were reported by press time.

Police says the suspicion is that the victims may have consumed contaminated food, and investigations are ongoing.
