MP Cecilia Ogwala Succumbs to Cancer

Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament, Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, is dead. Ogwal (77) is said to have succumbed to cancer in India on Thursday.

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among has confirmed the death of an iron lady, Cecilia Ogwal at her X handle today’s morning.

“It is with a heavy heart and pain that I announce the passing of our Mother, Mentor and role model Imat Cecilia Atim Ogwal, the Honourable Member representing the Women of Dokolo District. I send my sincere sympathies to her dear husband and the family, friends, the people of Lango and colleagues!  May her soul find eternal rest,” reads the Speaker’s message.

Ogwal earned herself the iron lady title for her exceptional legislative role and being vocal in the constituency assembly at a time when very few women were in Parliament.

A second born in a family of 14 children, Ogwal was born in 1946 to Opio Boniface (RIP) and Rosemary Apio.

She has been married to Lamech Ogwa, with seven biological children and several adopted ones. – One of the first four pioneer girls to do Commerce in East Africa.

She joined politics at the age of 12 while in Senior One at Sacred Heart, Gulu in 1961.

She attended Gayaza High School, before joining Nairobi University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and International Trade.

Ogwal undertook several responsibilities in the management field after her graduation. In 1980, she was appointed assistant secretary general at a UPC delegate’s conference. In the same year she quit the management field to run the party full time.
